Tarzan & Jane

When the movie Tarzan came out, I was nine. I loved everything about it, from the colors and artwork to the soundtrack and characters. There was something about the romance of opposites and the freedom of the wild that really spoke to me, and again when I had my daughter, we revisited some of our favorites. We would often rock her to sleep to our favorite songs from these movies, and this image of Jane meeting Tarzan for the first time is burned forever into my heart.

I made the original entirely in ballpoint ink on basic off-white sketch paper. I spent many evenings layering the cross-hatching to create shading and depth in my usual comic print style and once I got that part finished, I couldn't bring myself to add colors to it. To this day, it is one of my family's favorites.
